Education

It is central to Theatre and Beyond's ethos that the professional excellence we strive for in our New Writing programme should apply also to our education and community work.

In 1999, our education/community programme started with a short multi-media drama involving fifteen students from Marina High School (COMART). With a director, dancer, musician and video maker they devised their own performance which was platformed as part of our main programme at the Old Market in Hove.

In 2000, TAB commissioned a play for young people called Six Inches of Travel by Josie Melia, which two schools in designated education action zones, used as the basis to script and devise their own piece of theatre. We also devised an education remix project where students from other Brighton schools took the themes of Six Inches of Travel and "remixed" the play using their own themes and dialogue. These were also presented at the Brighton Festival.

In 2002, work centred around performances of Mrs.Meszaros in Folkestone with a series of workshops in Kent schools led by Suhayla el Bashra. In an area with a high refugee population, the parallels between the current refugee crisis in Europe and the telling of the Holocaust story were very immediate and relevant.
