Homeschooling History Field Trip:  Make it Fun!

History helps us in so many ways.  We can become enlightened,

and learn from other human beings mistakes.

Yet history should be more than that – it can be fun, believe it or

not.  It's merely the way it's presented (think Public School) that

can lead to boredom.

Look at the PBS documentary on the Civil War, by Ken Burns.

It is a rather fascinating and disturbing look at this country and

its history – how it became unified.  Hardly boring.

Homeschooling Field Trips:  History

To make history fun for your students, first seek feedback.  Yes,

get input from your student, and find out what segment of a

historic era, or event, he'd like to study further.

Once armed with this, you'll be able to design a fascinating

homeschooling history field trip !

Homeschooling Field Trip:  Syllabus

Naturally, you'll want to have an outline pre-made, with

enough copies for all the students in attendance.

You, as the Teacher, want to hit the major points of what

you'll be learning on your homeschooling history field trip.

Have all of your objectives listed for the assignment, as well

as when it is due, and maybe even have the students grade

you (give you feedback) on how well you conducted yourself

during the trip.

*Feedback is a good thing, as you can improve in the
future, which will only benefit your children.

Homeschooling Field Trip – An Example for You

Devote one of your classes to discussion of Medieval Times.

Discover what aspect  of this time period interests your kids the

most. So, for example, your son may be interested in the battles

during the Medieval period - the armor, and the swords and

weaponry of the time.

Or, perhaps your child finds the the castles & architecture of the

period grand – the castles were vast, and often had intricate detail or

"ornamentation".   I found this very intriguing myself.

Here's an idea for you: at Amazon.com, have your son explore this

further with the book, "Explore Within a Medieval Castle".

This book is 3D, and will open up more & more, revealing extra

detail as you pull open the pages.  The book covers why castles

were made of stone, where the best location to put a castle was,

and more. Note that you can pick it up cheap over at amazon.com

Maybe one of your children is a girl, and is swept away by the

dresses & gowns the women wore (can you say "fashion").

Whatever the case is, capitalize on it by ascertaining what they

like before the trip.  Jot it down.

Then, point things out during the homeschooling field trip.  Expound

on things.  Enlarge the subject.  There are some printable sheets

you can use at  the following website:
