Tweet The Movies

For those who twitter, you already know how much movies are talked about online and especially on Twitter, but did you know that the movie industry actually compiles statistics about movies based on your tweets? Box Office magazine has weekly listings based just on those little one-liners people toss out all day.

They base a lot of their statistics on what people tweet about on Mondays. They can tell more what a movie is going to do at the box office based on the Twitter hype. For instance, New Moon from the Twilight series, got 94,789 tweets the Monday after it opened. Thats a huge amount of people mentioning the film in one place and a great way for statistics to be tallied.

By using the data, they try to predict how much the film will gross in the following week and during its first run. So far, it is turning out to be a very accurate indicator of what the studio can expect. They then follow it every day and make even more predictions.
Where Twitter doesnt give very accurate information is for films which appeal to either very young viewers or much older ones because neither of those groups tend to use Twitter. They even factor in how many spammers are touting a film and subtract it from the total.

So, the next time you tweet about a movie to your friends, know that someone is watching and youre being counted. Kind of fun, kind of weird, and kind of interesting too. And if youre really curious, you can read about it every week on Box Office magazine. Its online. theater
