Movie tickets are getting higher and higher. In some major cities as high as $20 to see some popular films. Did you ever wonder where the money goes? So you buy your ticket, hand over your hard earned money and get a ticket. Many people think that the theater gets 50% of the price. Its not true.
Most of the money you pay goes straight back to the film studio that released the film because they lease the movie itself to the theater and for a very set period of time. The theater gets to keep about 20% of the total ticket sales for the first couple of weeks. So if you paid $12, the house only gets to keep around $3. Thats not much considering maintenance, rent or mortgage and salaries! Think about the facility and then realize that it takes a lot of moviegoers for a place to make money.
As the weeks go on, the theater actually starts to make more. Its as much as 50% by that time, but how many people are still going to see the movie. How many people do you see in a theater when a movie has been on that long. Its fun sitting in a near empty movie house and having it to yourself, but the poor owner!
So if you ever wondered by the popcorn costs so much, that why and its also why they run all those commercials before the movie starts. The movie studios want all they can get because all of their movies dont make money. For every Avatar, there are loads that dont make much money if any at all. So when you hear about some actor getting millions of dollars to make a film, its okay to get mad. Youre paying for the honor.
